About Cinque Torri
The Cinque Torri are five dolomitic rock buttresses southwest of Cortina, in the Nuvolau group. Torre Grande, the largest, reaches 2.361 metres. Each tower has its own name, and the area has long been the training ground for the Scoiattoli, Cortina’s climbing group.
During the First World War the area was occupied by the Italian army, which installed artillery positions and trenches facing the Austro-Hungarian lines at Lagazuoi. The works have been restored and form an open-air museum, with trenches, shelters and observation posts along waymarked trails among the towers.
The Cinque Torri museum is part of a larger network of open-air Great War museums, which includes Lagazuoi and Sasso di Stria. In the area are Rifugio Cinque Torri and Rifugio Scoiattoli, with terraces facing the Tofane.
The chairlift to Cinque Torri rises from Bai de Dones, on the road to Passo Falzarego. It operates in the summer season and the ski season; check the dates.
Before you go
Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
2 to 3 hours, including the ascent and the trench circuit.
Best time
From mid-June to September, when the trails are dry. In the morning the light falls straight on the towers; in the late afternoon the refuges are quieter.
How to get there
From Cortina, about 15 km along the road to Passo Falzarego to Bai de Dones, where the chairlift departs. In season, local buses run the Falzarego road.
Tip
Combine this with Lagazuoi on the same day: both are on the same road and tell opposite sides of the same wartime front. Wear hiking shoes, as the trench route has rocks and steps.
