About Basilica dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo

The Basilica dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo is the parish church of Cortina d'Ampezzo. It was built between 1769 and 1775 on the site of two earlier churches from the 13th and 16th centuries, and stands in the centre, between Corso Italia and Via del Mercato. Until 1964 it belonged to the Diocese of Bressanone, a reminder of the time when Cortina was part of the Austrian Tyrol.

The interior has a single nave with 18th-century decoration. The nave paintings are by the Tyrolean Franz Anton Zeiller, executed in 1774 and 1775, and the ceiling paintings, from 1859, are by the ampezzano Giuseppe Ghedina. Also notable are an altar carved by Andrea Brustolon and an organ with more than 3,000 pipes.

The Corso Italia runs around the church — the pedestrian street of Cortina, with shops, cafés and buildings with wooden balconies. It is the heart of town life and the best place to start a walking tour.

It is an active church: visit outside mass times, with shoulders and knees covered.
