About Renon
The Renon, Ritten in German, is the plateau that stretches north of Bolzano, between 1,000 and 1,300 meters above sea level, with villages, fields, woods and views of the Dolomites such as the Sciliar and the Catinaccio. Residents of Bolzano go up there to escape the valley heat in summer.
The ascent begins at the Renon cable car, whose station is on Via Renon, a few minutes from the train station. Cabins depart every 4 to 12 minutes and take 12 minutes to reach Soprabolzano, Oberbozen in German. During maintenance periods, a bus replaces the cable car.
In Soprabolzano the Renon little train begins, a narrow-gauge railway inaugurated in 1907, the last of its kind in Alto Adige. It runs year-round and connects Soprabolzano to Collalbo, Klobenstein in German, in about 18 minutes, crossing the plateau. From Collalbo and Soprabolzano trails lead to the earth pyramids.
In summer you can continue to the Corno del Renon, a mountain with its own cable car and wide views of the Dolomites.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
Half a day to a full day, with walks/hikes.
Best time
From May to October, for walking when days are long. In July and August it’s the escape from Bolzano’s heat. On clear mornings the view of the Dolomites is sharper.
How to get there
Renon cable car, station on Via Renon in Bolzano, about a 10-minute walk from the train station. In Soprabolzano the small train continues to Collalbo. Tickets are integrated in the Alto Adige transport system.
Tip
Buy a ticket that includes the cable car and the little train. Bring a jacket: it’s several degrees cooler on the plateau than in Bolzano. Combine the visit with the Longomoso earth pyramids.
