About Castel Firmiano - Messner Mountain Museum Firmian

Castel Firmiano, Schloss Sigmundskron in German, occupies a rocky hill on the right bank of the Adige river, in the southwest outskirts of Bolzano. The site appears in documents around 945 under the name Formicaria. In 1473 it was bought by Duke Sigismund of Austria, who enlarged it as a fortress and gave it the German name Sigmundskron, Sigismund's crown.

Since 2006 the ruins have housed the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian, the main of the museums created by Reinhold Messner, a mountaineer from South Tyrol who climbed all the peaks over 8,000 meters. The route goes through walls, stairways and towers and treats the mountain through geology, myths and religions, mountaineering and tourism, with rocks, sculptures, images and objects from expeditions.

From the towers, the view encompasses the Adige valley and Bolzano. The museum operates seasonally, usually from March to November, with a day off on Thursdays; check before you go.
