About Teatro Regio di Parma

The Teatro Regio was built at the behest of Maria Luisa of Austria, Duchess of Parma and former wife of Napoleon, and opened in 1829 under the name Nuovo Ducale Teatro. The neoclassical façade, with columns, faces Strada Garibaldi in the city centre.

The main auditorium has a horseshoe shape, four tiers of boxes and a gallery, decorated in white, gold and red velvet. The ceiling was painted with figures of poets and playwrights. The theatre is regarded as one of the leading stages of Italian opera, and the Parma audience is known for being demanding.

The connection with Giuseppe Verdi, who was born in the province of Parma, is strong. The Festival Verdi usually takes place between September and October, with the composer's operas staged at the Regio and at other venues in the region.

Outside rehearsal and performance days, the theatre runs guided tours in Italian and English of the foyer, the main auditorium and the Ridotto, the reception hall. Tours last about 30 minutes and may be suspended when rehearsals are taking place.
