About Cattedrale di Parma
Locals call the cathedral the Duomo, which means cathedral. The Romanesque church, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, was consecrated in 1106. The stone façade has three stories of open galleries and a portal with marble lions. Beside it stands the Gothic bell tower.
The great highlight is up above. Between 1524 and 1530, Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, painted the Assumption of the Virgin on the dome, a fresco of about 650 square meters in which a crowd of saints and angels spirals upward toward heaven. The painting, seen from below, influenced the Baroque domes that followed.
In the right transept is the Deposition from the Cross, a marble relief signed by Benedetto Antelami in 1178. It is the sculptor's first known work; he later made the Battistero right next door. The naves contain 16th-century frescoes, and the crypt preserves columns and remains of floor mosaics.
The Piazza Duomo, where the cathedral, the Battistero and the bishop's palace stand, is one of the best-preserved medieval squares in the region.
