About Basilica di Santa Maria della Steccata
The Steccata was built between 1521 and 1539 to house an image of the Virgin that attracted many devotees. The name comes from the steccata, the wooden fence that protected the image from the crowd. The church has a Greek cross plan, with a large central dome and four apses.
The frescoes on the arch above the presbytery are by Francesco Mazzola, known as Parmigianino, one of the great Mannerist painters, born in Parma. He painted the figures of the Wise and Foolish Virgins and the decorative elements around them. The work took longer than agreed, and the dispute with the patrons even led to his imprisonment.
Since 1718 the church has been the seat of the Constantinian Order of Saint George, a chivalric order linked to the families who ruled Parma. In the crypt are the tombs of members of the Farnese and Bourbon-Parma families. The Museo Costantiniano, next door, houses liturgical objects and items of the order.
The church is on Strada Garibaldi, near Piazza Garibaldi, and the façade is understated compared with what you see inside.
