About Torre Ghirlandina

The Ghirlandina is the cathedral's bell tower and also the civic tower of Módena. The first four levels were erected together with the Duomo, until around 1130, to a design by Lanfranco. Masters from Campione completed the work in the 12th and 13th centuries, and in the 14th century it gained the octagonal tip designed by Arrigo da Campione.

At 86.12 metres, it was a sign of prestige compared with the towers of Bolonha, a rival city. The name comes from the marble balustrades at the top, which resemble garlands.

The visit climbs about 200 steps up to the Sala dei Torresani, where the tower guards were stationed. There you can see the story of the Secchia Rapita, the wooden bucket taken from the people of Bolonha in the battle of Zappolino in 1325; the bucket in the tower is a replica. From the windows you can see the Piazza Grande and the roofs of the centre. The top of the tower is not open to the public.

Entries are at fixed times, with a maximum of 25 people per group, and reservation is mandatory. There is no elevator.
