About Cripta del Peccato Originale

The Cripta del Peccato Originale is set on a slope of the Gravina di Picciano, on the outskirts of Matera. It was the church of a community of Benedictine monks from the Lombard period. Abandoned for centuries, it served as a shelter for shepherds and was rediscovered in 1963 by a group of young people from Matera.

The frescoes, dated between the 8th and 9th centuries, were painted by an anonymous artist nicknamed Pittore dei Fiori di Matera, for the red flowers he spread across the walls. For this reason the cave earned the nickname of the Sistine Chapel of rock art.

On the left wall, three niches show the Apostles, the Virgin Queen with the Child and the Archangels. On the back wall are scenes from Genesis: the creation of light and darkness, Adam and Eve and the Original Sin, which gives the crypt its name.

The cave has been restored and fitted with special lighting. The visit is short and guided, carried out in small groups to protect the paintings.
