About Cattedrale di Matera
The cathedral was built starting in 1230 on the rock of the Civita, which had to be raised by more than six meters so the temple would dominate the two Sassi. It was completed in 1270 and is today dedicated to the Madonna della Bruna, the city’s patron, and to Sant'Eustachio.
The façade follows Apulian Romanesque, with a large 16‑ray rose window and a carved portal. The bell tower, about 52 metres high, is visible from almost every point of the Sassi and from the Murgia viewpoint.
The interior has three naves and underwent Baroque alterations, with gilt stucco, as well as a 16th‑century stone nativity scene and medieval frescoes. The tourist visit is part of a route that includes the MATA, the diocesan museum next door.
On 2 July, the Festa della Bruna carries the image of the patron in procession on a large papier‑mâché cart, destroyed by the crowd at the end of the day in a centuries‑old tradition.
