About Santa Maria del Casale

Santa Maria del Casale lies outside the centre, about 3 km to the north, near the airport. It was built between the late 13th and early 14th centuries on the site where, according to tradition, there was a small chapel with an image of the Virgin venerated by sailors.

The façade is striking for its geometric design, made with stones of two colours, light and dark, in bands and lozenges, with a small porch at the entrance. The style mixes Apulian Romanesque with the Gothic that arrived with the Angevin kings.

The interior is the reason to visit. The walls of the single nave are covered with 14th-century frescoes. On the wall inside the façade, a large Last Judgment signed by Rinaldo da Taranto shows heaven, purgatory and hell in bands. Along the side walls follow saints, scenes from the life of Christ and figures of knights bearing coats of arms.

In 1310 the church hosted the trial of the Templars of Puglia, when the order was prosecuted across Europe.
