About Museo Archeologico Provinciale Francesco Ribezzo
The archaeological museum of Brindisi occupies a building on the Piazza Duomo, with entrance through the portal of the Knights Templar. It is named after Francesco Ribezzo, a scholar of the region's ancient languages, and brings together what has been found in the city and its surroundings over more than a century of excavations.
The collection ranges from prehistory to the Middle Ages. There are ceramics of the Messapians, the people who lived in the Salento before the Romans, inscriptions, statues, coins and objects from the Roman port, which made Brindisi the gateway of Italy to the East.
The highlight is the bronzes of Punta del Serrone. In 1992 divers found on the seabed near Brindisi hundreds of fragments of Greek and Roman bronze statues, which were probably on a ship that sank on the way to a foundry. Once restored, they reveal portraits, bodies and details that almost never survive, because ancient bronze was often melted down.
The museum also has a section on the underwater archaeology of the coast and pieces from medieval Brindisi.
