About Cattedrale di Brindisi
The cathedral of Brindisi sits at the highest point of the town centre, a few steps from the coluna romana. The first church was consecrated at the end of the 11th century, and there the emperor Frederick II married Isabella of Brienne, heiress to the Kingdom of Jerusalem, in 1225. An earthquake in 1743 demolished much of the building, and the cathedral you see today is the 18th-century reconstruction, with a restrained Baroque façade.
Inside, what remains of the medieval church is a section of the 12th-century mosaic floor, with animal figures and scenes, preserved in the floor near the altar. The interior has a wide nave, side chapels and a wooden choir.
The square around it, the Piazza Duomo, is one of the city's most attractive ensembles. On one side stands the Loggia Balsamo, a 14th-century balcony supported on carved consoles. On the other, the portal of the Knights Templar, with Gothic arches, leads to the Ribezzo archaeological museum. The seminary palace and the bell tower complete the square.
The visit pairs well with the museum, which is on the same square, and with the walk down to the coluna romana and the waterfront.
