About Quartiere Murat

The Quartiere Murat is named after Joachim Murat, Napoleon's brother-in-law and King of Naples, who ordered the construction of Bari's new town next to the medieval city. The first house was built in 1816, and the neighborhood grew in regular blocks, with streets intersecting at right angles.

Via Sparano di Bari, a pedestrian street that connects Piazza Umberto I (in front of the station) to Corso Vittorio Emanuele, is the main shopping road. It houses the Palazzo Mincuzzi, from 1928, with an ornate façade and glass dome, and the church of San Ferdinando.

On Corso Cavour is the Teatro Petruzzelli, inaugurated in 1903, the largest theater in Bari and one of the largest in Italy, with an opera, ballet and concert season. On Corso Vittorio Emanuele, which separates the neighborhood from Bari Vecchia, are the Palazzo Fizzarotti, in eclectic style, and the town hall.

The neighborhood concentrates shops, cafés and hotels and is the natural route between Bari Centrale station and the old town.
