About Pinacoteca Metropolitana Corrado Giaquinto
The Pinacoteca Metropolitana di Bari, dedicated to the painter Corrado Giaquinto, who was born in Molfetta in the 18th century, was established in 1928. Since 1936 it has occupied the fourth floor of the Palazzo della Provincia, the building with the clock tower on the Lungomare Nazario Sauro.
The route follows a chronological order, from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The first rooms contain sculptures from the 11th and 12th centuries, medieval frescoes removed from Apulia's churches, and a collection of Byzantine icons.
One highlight is the Venetian painting, evidence of exchanges between Apulia and the Republic of Venice: there are works by the Vivarini, the Saint Peter Martyr by Giovanni Bellini, and canvases by Paris Bordon, Tintoretto, Palma il Giovane and Veronese. The 17th-century section shows Neapolitan painting influenced by Caravaggio and the Baroque of Luca Giordano.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.
