About Trullo Sovrano
The Trullo Sovrano is located on Piazza Sacramento, in the upper part of the town, behind the basilica. It began as a simple rural trullo and was enlarged in the second half of the 18th century by the Perta family, who turned it into a two-storey building about 14 meters high.
A 1797 document records that the work used mortar, contravening the rule of dry-stone construction. The name Sovrano (sovereign) was given in 1916 by a local scholar. The building served as the seat of a religious confraternity and, for a time, as the town's pharmacy, and it was declared a national monument in 1923.
Since 1994 it has operated as a house-museum. The rooms are furnished like the home of a wealthy family from the past, with a kitchen, bedrooms and alcoves, and an internal staircase leads to the second floor, a rarity among trulli.
In summer, the courtyard and the square in front usually host small shows and concerts.
