About Great Western Greenway
The Great Western Greenway is a cycle and footpath of about 42 km that follows the route of the former Westport to Achill railway, opened in 1895 and closed in 1937. The route was opened in 2010 and became one of Ireland's most sought-after bike rides: car-free, mostly flat and waymarked.
The path is divided into three sections. The first, from Westport to Newport, about 13 km, goes through fields and farms; the second, from Newport to Mulranny, about 18 km, is the most scenic, along the shore of Clew Bay with views of the islands and Croagh Patrick; the third, from Mulranny to Achill Sound, about 13 km, crosses open boglands with the Nephin Beg mountains in the background and ends at the bridge to Achill island.
Along the route there are stone bridges, old stations and cafés. Newport has a seven-arch railway viaduct over the river, and Mulranny sits beside a beach with a boardwalk to the sand.
In Westport, Newport and Achill there are bike hire companies, including electric bikes, that offer bus return transport, allowing you to cycle one way. The Atlantic wind is often strong and can make the final stretch tougher.
