About Gallarus Oratory

The Oratory of Gallarus is a small stone church built by the peninsula's early Christians, in a field near Smerwick Bay, about 8 km from Dingle. The exact date is debated: some place it between the 7th and 8th centuries and others around the 12th century. It is one of the best-preserved early religious buildings in Ireland.

The building, roughly 7 by 5 metres externally, has the shape of an upturned boat. The walls were built from carefully fitted stones, without mortar, sloping inward until they meet at the top, and the interior remains dry after more than a thousand years of Atlantic rain. The only entrance is a low door on the west façade, and on the east wall there is a small arched window.

The interior is dark and empty, lit only by the door and the window. Outside, near the entrance, sits a stone bearing a cross and an ancient inscription. Around it, the fields slope down to the sea, with Mount Brandon in the background.

The oratory is a national monument looked after by the State and is always accessible. Near the car park there is a privately run visitor centre with a café and a short film. Visitors who park outside the centre reach it on foot via a trail.
