About Na Seacht dTeampaill
At Na Seacht dTeampaill, the Sete Igrejas, there is a group of monastic ruins near the village of Eoghanacht on the west of Inis Mór, about 11 km from Kilronan. Despite the name, only two of the buildings are churches: the others are houses and support buildings of a pilgrimage centre that operated between the 8th and 15th centuries.
The largest church is Teampall Bhreacáin, associated with Saint Brecán, who is said to have founded a monastery there in the 5th or 6th century. It was enlarged several times, with parts dating from the 8th to the 15th century, and retains stone windows and arches. The smaller church is Teampall an Phoill. Around them are the ruins of stone houses where monks and pilgrims lived.
On the ground are ancient graves and stone slabs with inscriptions, including one bearing the Latin words "VII ROMANI", interpreted as a memorial to seven Romans, perhaps pilgrims. Carved fragments of high crosses in a Celtic style are also visible. The cemetery continues in use by the island community.
The site lies on a slope facing the sea, enclosed by stone walls, and is open without an entrance building. It is a quiet stop at the end of the west-island bicycle route.
