About Dún Eochla
Dún Eochla is a dry-stone circular fort at the highest point of Inis Mór, about 100 metres above sea level, in the centre of the island. It was probably built between the 6th and 9th centuries, after Dún Aonghasa, and is one of the best-preserved stone forts in the Ilhas Aran.
The fort has two concentric walls: the inner, taller one forms an oval enclosure, with steps and terraces on the inside, and the outer wall surrounds the complex. The stones were fitted without mortar, and parts of the walls were restored in the 19th century.
Beside it stands the old Inis Mór lighthouse, dating from 1818, decommissioned a few years later because it was too high and the fog obscured the light. The stone tower still stands and is a landmark in the island landscape.
From the top of the fort you get one of the best views on the island: the three Ilhas Aran, Galway Bay, the mountains of Connemara and, to the south, the Burren and the Falésias de Moher on clear days. Being off the main minibus route, it usually has few visitors. Access is free.

Frequently asked questions about Dún Eochla
Is Dún Eochla similar to Dún Aonghasa?
Both are stone forts, but Dún Eochla is circular, situated higher up on the island and not on the cliff edge. It usually has fewer visitors.
Is there an entrance fee to visit?
No. Access is free; there is no ticket office.
What is the tower next to it?
The old Inis Mór lighthouse, from 1818, decommissioned because fog obscured the light on the high part of the island.
