About Laurenskerk

The Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, commonly known as Laurenskerk, began construction in 1412 and was completed at the end of the 15th century. The tower was raised several times; the top story, from the 17th century, mixes Gothic and Baroque elements and features a stone clock.

During the bombing of 14 May 1940 the church caught fire and only the walls and tower remained standing. The decision to restore rather than demolish it made the church a symbol of reconstruction. It is the only building remaining from medieval Rotterdam's centre.

Inside, the nave is spacious and bright. The church houses several organs, including the large main organ, and hosts concerts and events. The bronze doors tell the story of the war and the reconstruction.

The church is dedicated to Saint Lawrence, the city's patron. It stands on Grotekerkplein, next to the Markthal, and the statue of Erasmus from 1622 is outside.
