About Kunsthal

The Kunsthal opened in 1992 as the first exhibition center of its kind in the Netherlands. It has no own collection: the rooms host about six to seven exhibitions at the same time, which change throughout the year and range from major painters to photography, design, fashion and popular culture.

The building is by Rotterdam architect Rem Koolhaas, of the OMA office. It is a low box with a slender tower, and each facade is different. Inside, ramps connect the galleries, and expensive materials like marble appear alongside corrugated metal, exposed concrete and tree trunks.

A public ramp cuts across the building and overcomes the six-meter level difference between Westzeedijk avenue, next to the dike, and the Museumpark. Pedestrians use the ramp even without entering the exhibitions.

Next door are the Museu de História Natural de Roterdã, the Nieuwe Instituut and the Depot Boijmans, which makes the Museumpark the best place in the city for a museum day.
