About Hotel New York
The brick building with two small towers at the tip of the Wilhelminapier was built between 1901 and 1917 to serve as the headquarters of the Holland-Amerika Lijn, the company that carried passengers and emigrants from Roterdã to North America. By 1900 about half a million people had already crossed with it, and the number grew greatly in the following decades.
The company's last ship left the pier in 1971. The building, which is a national monument, became a hotel in 1993 when the area was still neglected. The restaurant occupies the former office halls, and you can enter to eat or have coffee without staying overnight.
Around it, Kop van Zuid became a neighbourhood of glass towers and offices linked to the centre by the Erasmusbrug. On the Wilhelminapier are buildings such as De Rotterdam by Rem Koolhaas, and the cruise terminal. On the other side of the Rijnhaven, the peninsula of Katendrecht, called De Kaap, houses the Fenix museum and a square full of restaurants.
A small water taxi (watertaxi) connects the hotel to various points on the river, and Wilhelminaplein metro is a few minutes on foot.
