About Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen
Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen houses more than 150,000 objects from the Museu Boijmans Van Beuningen, one of the country's oldest art museums. Instead of hiding the reserve collection in a basement, the museum built a building to display it: works are stored in climate-controlled compartments and visitors move among them over six floors.
The building, nicknamed De Pot (the pot) by locals, is 40 metres tall and entirely clad in mirrors that reflect Museumpark and the sky. Inside, staircases cross a glass atrium where paintings and display cases hang. You can watch conservators at work in the studios and see how a collection is stored and cared for.
The collection ranges from medieval painting to contemporary art: Rubens, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Monet, Dalí and an important body of surrealism. The works on display change frequently, and some galleries host temporary exhibitions.
On the planted rooftop terrace there is a restaurant and views over the city. The museum's main building next door is closed for a long renovation; meanwhile the collection is on display in the Depot.
