Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.

Confirm before buying. From Schiphol the train takes 40 to 50 minutes to Delft station, depending on the schedule, with or without a change. From Haia it's about 15 minutes by train, or the tram, which links the two cities. From Roterdã the train is also quick.

How many days

One day is enough for the Markt, the two churches, the Vermeer Centrum, the boat tour and the Royal Delft. If you're short on time you can see the center in an afternoon. Many people stay overnight in Delft and visit Haia and Roterdã by train.

When to go

From April to October, when the canal boats operate and the days are longer; summer runs from June to August. In winter, from December to February, it's cold and gets dark early, but churches and museums remain open. Rain and wind can appear at any time of year.

The seasons shown are the most usual ones; nature doesn't always follow the calendar.

Do you need a car?

No. The center is small and almost entirely closed to cars; everything can be done on foot from the station. Only the Royal Delft is farther away, about a 20-minute walk or a few minutes by bus. Bicycle (fiets) is the local transport: be careful when crossing the cycle lanes.

Suggested itinerary

An order that works

Built with the places on this page. No rush: it's paced so you have time to see them.

One day in Delft
  1. Morning
    Markt and Nieuwe Kerk

From the station, walk 10 minutes to the Markt. Visit the Nieuwe Kerk, with the tomb of Guilherme de Orange, and climb the tower if the day is clear. On exit, look at the façade of the Stadhuis on the other side of the square.

  2. Afternoon
    Vermeer Centrum and Oude Kerk

Have lunch near the Markt. Visit the Vermeer Centrum on the Voldersgracht, then walk to the Oude Kerk, where Vermeer is buried. Use the same ticket from the Nieuwe Kerk, which usually covers both churches.

  3. Late afternoon
    Canals of Delft

From April to October, take the boat tour of about 50 minutes leaving from the Koornmarkt. Off-season, walk along the banks of the Oude Delft to the Oost-Indisch Huis. Those who prefer ceramics can swap the boat for the Royal Delft, earlier in the day before it closes.

  4. Evening
    Dinner in the old town

Have dinner at one of the restaurants around the Markt or by a canal. Dinner starts early, from 18:00. To return to Haia, there are trains and trams running late.

Check before you go. Opening hours and days change, and places may close for renovations, holidays or events. This itinerary is a suggestion from Cidade Turismo, not a commitment: plan yours by checking directly with each place you intend to visit.
