About Teleférico e porto velho de Fira
The old port of Fira, called Gialos or Skala, lies at the foot of the caldera cliff, about 220 meters below the town. For centuries it was the only link between Fira and the sea, and it is still where the tenders from cruise ships arrive and where the boats to the volcano and the hot springs depart. It has a small quay, tavernas and shops.
The cable car, built in the early 1980s with a donation from a family of island shipowners, connects the port to central Fira in a few minutes in six-person cabins. The upper station sits next to the Archaeological Museum. On cruise days the queue is long in both directions, especially late in the afternoon when everyone returns to the ship.
The alternative is the zigzag staircase of almost 600 steps, the same route used by the mules. The descent takes about 20 minutes; the climb, 30 to 45 minutes, in the heat and with the ground made dirty by the animals. Seen from the steps, the caldera is the reason for the walk.
The cable car ride is worth it by itself: the descent shows the cliff of volcanic layers and the sea far below.

How much time to set aside

Best time
Early in the morning or late in the day, outside cruise ship schedules. The cable car has reduced hours in winter and may stop in very strong winds; confirm.
How to get there
