About Oia
Oia (pronounced Ía) is located at the northern tip of Santorini, about 11 km from Fira. The village grew on top of the caldera cliff, and houses were carved into the volcanic rock: the cave houses, which stay cool in summer. At the highest point are the ruins of the Venetian castle, called Kastro or Fort Londsa, which served as a lookout and today is the most popular viewpoint for the sunset.
The main street, paved with marble, runs along the caldera rim between shops, galleries and blue‑domed churches. In the upper parts are the captains' houses, late‑19th‑century townhouses built by shipowners when Oia depended on maritime trade. The Museu Marítimo, in one of those houses, tells that era with ship models, nautical charts and photographs.
Down below, at the foot of the cliff, is the bay of Ammoudi, with fish tavernas and a small port where boats leave for the island of Therasia. It's about 300 steps down; the return climb is hard in the heat. Further south, the bay of Armeni also has a boat quay.
The village is small and can be walked in one or two hours. In the morning the lanes are empty; in the late afternoon buses and cruise groups arrive for the sunset, and the place gets very busy from June to September.

Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
Allow 2 to 3 hours for the village and the castle; add another hour if you descend to Ammoudi.
Best time
Early morning, when the lanes are empty and the light hits the white houses. The sunset usually draws crowds at the castle from June to September: arrive early or watch it from another point on the caldera. On cruise ship days the village is full from mid‑morning until late afternoon.
How to get there
KTEL bus from Fira, about a 25-minute journey with departures throughout the day (more frequent in summer). By car, via the road along the north rim; parking is at the entrance to the village and fills up. On foot, via the caldera trail from Fira, in about 3 hours.
Tip
Wear closed shoes: the marble paving is slippery. If you want to go down to Ammoudi, go late in the afternoon and return by taxi or be fit for the 300 steps. The most photographed church, with three bells and a blue dome, is on the path between the castle and the main street.
