About Museu Arqueológico de Thera
The Museu Arqueológico de Thera is in Fira, near the cable car station, and covers the period that begins where the Museu Pré-histórico ends: from the geometric period, around the 9th century BC, up to the Romans. Almost everything comes from Thera Antiga, the Dorian town on the top of Mesa Vouno mountain, and from its necropoleis.
The collection includes geometric and archaic vases, many found in tombs, sculptures, inscriptions and everyday objects. Among the well-known pieces are an Attic black-figure krater with ships painted on the rim and the Koré de Thera, a marble statue of a young woman from the 7th century BC, nearly 2.5 meters tall.
The current building dates from 1960, built after the previous museum collapsed in the 1956 earthquake, and has undergone a full renovation. The rooms are small and the visit is quick; it pairs well with the Museu Pré-histórico, a few minutes' walk away, to see the island's history in sequence. It usually closes one day a week; check before you go.
