About Rio–Antirrio Bridge
The Rio–Antirrio bridge crosses the strait at the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth and connects the Peloponnese to continental Greece. Its official name is Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge, in honor of the 19th-century prime minister who dreamed of the link. It was inaugurated in 2004, shortly before the Athens Olympic Games, and replaced the ferries that used to make the crossing.
It is almost 3 km long including the approaches, and is a multi-span cable-stayed bridge with four large pylons supporting the deck by cables. It was designed for an earthquake-prone region with an unstable seabed: the pylons rest on the seabed without being fixed to it, so they can follow ground movements.
For visitors, the bridge is best seen from Rio, about 8 km north of central Patras. On the Peloponnese side sits the castle of Rio, a late 15th-century waterfront fortress that can be visited, and on the opposite bank the castle of Antirrio. Rio's waterfront has tavernas and a promenade with views of the bridge.
The car crossing is tolled. The old ferries still operate between Rio and Antirrio as an alternative.
