About Archaeological Museum of Patras

The Archaeological Museum of Patras opened in 2009 in a modern building in the north of the city, on the road out to Athens. The design, by the firm Bobotis+Bobotis, features a large metallic dome and a reflecting pool at the entrance, and the grounds include gardens.

The collection is organised into three permanent sections: private life and crafts, public life in the Roman period, and funerary customs. A fourth room hosts temporary exhibitions. The items date from the 17th century BC to the end of Antiquity.

The highlight is the collection of Roman mosaics, one of the largest in Greece: 14 mosaics totaling about 250 square metres, most displayed vertically like paintings, which allows close viewing of the designs. The museum also reconstructs in full scale parts of Roman houses, with floors and walls, and three tombs, two Mycenaean and one Roman.

With panels in Greek and English, the visit helps to understand the city that can later be seen at the odeon and the castle.
