About Achaia Clauss

Achaia Clauss is located in the hills southeast of Patras, at about 500 meters altitude, on land bought in 1859 by the Bavarian Gustav Clauss. He arrived in the region interested in the Corinth raisin trade and built a summer house there, where he planted some vines. In 1861 he founded the winery, one of the oldest in operation in Greece.

The wine that made the house famous is Mavrodaphne, a sweet, fortified red made from the grape of the same name, typical of the Patras region. The winery also produces dry wines, such as Demestica.

The stone buildings, with towers and battlements, resemble a small castle and are surrounded by trees and gardens. The visit goes through the old cellars, where oak barrels contain wines from old vintages, some kept for more than a century, and ends with a tasting.

From the top of the hill you can see Patras and the gulf. Since wine is part of the local culture, the visit is also a lesson about the city's history and its trade with Europe in the 19th century.
