About Trilhas de Meteora
Before the paved road existed, monks and residents moved between Kastraki, Kalambaka and the monasteries along stone trails that still exist and have been signposted. They cross oak woods, pass by the bases of the pillars and lead to viewpoints unreachable by car. Walking them is the way to see Meteora as it was until the 1920s.
The most used route starts at Kastraki’s square, climbs the Doupiani rock to Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas in about 30 minutes, and continues through a wooded valley to the Grande Meteoro and Varlaam in roughly another hour. From there, a path between the rocks descends to Rousanou and continues by road and trail to Agia Triada, from where another old trail drops directly to Kalambaka’s upper neighborhood, next to the church da Dormição. The entire circuit takes 5 to 6 hours, including stops.
There are shorter paths to the ruins of abandoned monasteries, such as Ypapanti, hidden in a rock cavity north of the Grande Meteoro, and to the hermitages on the Agio Pneuma rock. The viewpoints of Psaropetra and the rock above Varlaam are near the road, but short trails lead to higher, quieter spots.
The trails are dirt and stone, with steep sections and slippery parts when wet; there is not always water or shade. Bring a map or an app with the route, closed shoes and water. In spring and autumn the weather usually helps; in summer, start early.
Before you go
Practical information
Cidade Turismo reviews its information regularly, but something may have changed. Check with the place before planning your trip.
How much time to set aside
From 30 minutes on the Kastraki–Agios Nikolaos section to 5 or 6 hours for the full circuit of the six monasteries.
Best time
Early in the morning, before the heat and the buses, and preferably from April to June or from September to October. Avoid after heavy rain, when the rocks become slippery. In winter, check the forecast for snow and fog.
How to get there
The main starting point is Kastraki’s square, 2 km from Kalambaka; signs indicate the way to Agios Nikolaos Anapafsas and the Grande Meteoro. Another entry is Kalambaka’s upper neighborhood, behind the church da Dormição, where the trail up to Agia Triada begins. Local guides and agencies organize hikes with return transport.
Tip
Do the circuit in the order Kastraki → Agios Nikolaos → Grande Meteoro → Varlaam → Rousanou → Agia Triada → Kalambaka: the steepest climbs are at the beginning. Check monastery closing days so you don’t arrive at closed doors. Bring cash for entrance fees and suitable clothing, as the trails end at the monastery doors.
