About Museu de História Natural de Meteora e Museu dos Cogumelos

The Museu de História Natural de Meteora e Museu dos Cogumelos is located on a street in the lower part of Kalambaka and has been open since 2014. The ground floor presents the fauna of Thessaly and the Pindus in dioramas: about 350 species of birds and mammals, including vultures, eagles, wolves, bears and deer, some of them rare or threatened in Greece.

The upper floor is dedicated to mushrooms, with around 250 regional species reproduced at life size and displayed in the habitats where they grow. The Meteora region and the surrounding mountains have a tradition of mushroom and truffle gathering, and the museum explains which are edible, which are poisonous and how harvesting is done.

The museum organises truffle-hunting outings with trained dogs in the region's woods, tastings of mushroom-based products, workshops for children and nocturnal visits. The shop sells pasta, sauces and sweets with mushrooms and truffle produced on site.

It is a short visit and good for rainy days or for those travelling with children, and complements a day at the monasteries. Check opening hours before you go.
