About Gruta de Theopetra (Spilaio Theopetras)
Theopetra Cave opens on the northeast side of an isolated limestone rock, next to the village of the same name, about 5 km from Kalambaka on the road to Trikala. Excavations carried out between 1987 and 2008 uncovered layers of uninterrupted human occupation from the Middle Paleolithic to the end of the Neolithic, some 6,000 years ago. It is one of the few places in Europe where, on the same site, you can trace the transition from Ice Age hunters to the first farmers.
The chamber is about 500 square metres and the arched entrance measures roughly 17 metres wide by 3 metres high, allowing natural light in; from inside you can see the rocks and the monasteries of Meteora in the distance. Finds include stone tools, pottery, bones and human footprints impressed in clay, attributed to children. At the entrance lie the remains of a stone wall dated to about 23,000 years ago, pointed out as one of the oldest known human constructions.
Visits to the cave were suspended for several years because of rockfall risk and resumed after protective works; the route is short and guided. The village has a documentation centre, with panels and excavation pieces, that explains the sequence of layers.
The cave usually closes one day a week and follows public service hours, closing in the mid-afternoon. Check before you go.
