About Marché Notre-Dame
The Marché Notre-Dame occupies the central square of the Notre-Dame neighborhood, the oldest part of the new town created by Louis XIV north of the palace. The square is surrounded by four covered pavilions, the carrés, where there are stalls selling cheese, meats, fish, bread and wine.
On some mornings during the week, the square also hosts open-air stalls selling fruit, vegetables and flowers, and that's when the market is liveliest. Around the square are cafés, boulangeries (the French bakeries), and restaurants that make use of the market's products.
Two blocks away is the Église Notre-Dame de Versailles, built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and consecrated in 1686. It was the parish church of the royal family, and baptisms, marriages and funerals of the court were recorded there.
For those visiting Versalhes from Paris, the market is a simple alternative to the palace cafés for lunch or for putting together a picnic for the park.
