About Château de Cheverny

The Château de Cheverny is in the Sologne, about 15 km south of Blois. It was built in the 17th century in a classical style, with designs by Jacques Bougier, an architect who also worked on the Château de Blois. The Hurault family, the marquises of Vibraye, have owned the land since the 15th century and still live in the château.

The interior is one of the most complete in the Loire Valley in terms of furnishings, with salons, bedrooms, an armoury and tapestries. The painted ceilings and walls date from the 17th century.

The Belgian cartoonist Hergé was inspired by Cheverny to create the château of Moulinsart, Captain Haddock’s home, in the Tintin adventures. A permanent exhibition on the premises recreates scenes from the albums.

The estate has gardens, a park with guided boat and electric-cart tours, and the hunting kennel with its pack. It is open every day of the year, without reservation.
