About Château de Chambord

The Château de Chambord is about 16 km from Blois, in the middle of the largest walled forest park in Europe, roughly 50 km² surrounded by a 32 km wall. It was built from 1519 by order of François I, who used it as a hunting lodge and a display of power.

The numbers give an idea of its size: 156 meters of façade, 426 rooms, 77 staircases and 282 fireplaces. At the centre is the double-helix staircase, where two people ascend and descend without crossing; its design is attributed to Leonardo da Vinci or inspired by his drawings.

From above, the terraces reveal a forest of roofs, chimneys and lanterns. Around it are formal French gardens, stables and the park, which can be explored on foot, by bicycle, by electric cart or by boat on the canal, depending on the season.

Chambord has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1981. It is open every day except 1 January and 25 December.
