About Pagode de Chanteloup

The Pagoda of Chanteloup is about 3 km from the center of Amboise, on the edge of the forest. It was built in 1775 by architect Louis-Denis Le Camus for the Duke of Choiseul, minister to Louis XV, after he was removed from court. The duke dedicated it to the friends who remained loyal during his exile.

The pagoda is all that remains of the great Château de Chanteloup, demolished before 1830. It mixes the Chinese style, fashionable in the 18th century, with French classical architecture.

There are 149 steps up to the top floor, from where you can see the Château d'Amboise, the forest and the valley. The park, with 14 hectares, has a crescent-shaped pond with rowboats, a small Chinese garden and old wooden play equipment for children.

The site is a historic monument and is open from March to November.
