About Cimetière marin de Bonifacio
The Cimetière marin, also called the cemetery of Saint-François, occupies the western tip of the Bonifácio plateau, on the cliff edge, near the church of Saint-François. The white funerary chapels, aligned like small streets, form a miniature town facing the sea.
It is one of the most visited places in the town, with hundreds of thousands of visitors a year. It remains in use by Bonifácio families: visitors must keep silence and respect burials.
Beside it is the Gouvernail de la Corse, a military lookout built in 1880. A tunnel of 168 steps descends through the rock to a chamber about 10 meters above the sea, with views to the strait and Sardenha. The name comes from a rudder-shaped rock just below.
On the path between the upper town and the cemetery, the ramparts and the old barracks show the military side of the plateau.
