About Place Foch
Place Foch is the liveliest square in Ajaccio's center, between the Hôtel de Ville and the port. Locals also call it Piazza Diamante. Plane trees shade cafés and benches.
In the center stands the Fountain of the Four Lions, from 1850, with a statue of Napoleon dressed as a Roman consul, by the sculptor Laboureur. It is one of several tributes to the emperor in the town.
Beside the square is Ajaccio's market, with island producers selling charcuterie, cheeses such as brocciu, honey, chestnuts and fruit. The market usually runs in the morning, except on Mondays. The fish stall is in the tourist office building behind the town hall.
From the square the waterfront continues to the beach Saint-François, a stretch of sand next to the 16th-century Genoese citadel, visible from outside while undergoing conversion works.
