About Cancale
Cancale is on the western tip of the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, about 15 km east of Saint-Malo. The town is known for its oysters: the flat ones from natural beds in deeper water, and the concave ones from farms, cultivated since around 1950.
At low tide the oyster beds show on the sand in front of the port of La Houle, the lower part of town, where the seafood restaurants are. Near the breakwater, stalls sell oysters to eat on the spot.
From the top of town and the coastal path, on clear days you can see Mont-Saint-Michel across the bay.
To the north, about 4 km away, is the Pointe du Grouin, and both visits fit into the same outing.
