About Musée du Mont-Blanc

The Musée du Mont-Blanc is the museum of the Chamonix valley. It operates in the building of a former luxury hotel in the town center and is the successor to the old Musée Alpin, established about a century ago.

The collection has around 18,000 items from the late 18th century to the early 21st century. The permanent exhibition is divided into three themes: Adaptations, about life in the valley; Exploits, about mountaineering and the first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786; and Paysages, about how painters and photographers depicted the mountain.

There are also temporary exhibitions and activities for children during French school holidays. It’s a good option for a rainy day or when the cable cars are closed due to weather.

The museum is closed on certain days of the week and has an annual closure at the end of autumn. Check opening times before you go.
