About Gorges du Fier
The Gorges du Fier are in Lovagny, about 10 km west of Annecy. The river Fier has carved a very narrow, deep canyon in the rock, which can be walked along via a footbridge attached to the wall.
The footbridge was built in 1869 by the architect Marius Vallin of Annecy, and the site has been protected since 1943. In some sections it stands about 25 metres above the river, and the walls almost meet at the top.
At the end of the route is the Mer de Rochers (sea of rocks), an area of large stone blocks. The visit is self-guided, with an explanatory leaflet given with the ticket.
The site is open only part of the year, generally from mid‑March to mid‑October. Outside that period it is closed.
