About Basilique de la Visitation
The Basilique de la Visitation is on the Crêt du Maure, the first spur of Mont Semnoz, and can be seen from almost the whole town. It was built in the first half of the 20th century for the Order of the Visitation.
The order was founded in Annecy in 1610 by São Francisco de Sales, bishop of Genebra who lived in Annecy, and by Santa Joana de Chantal. The relics of both saints are kept in the basilica, which receives pilgrims from around the world.
The interior has stained glass and mosaics, and the forecourt overlooks the roofs of Annecy, the lake and the mountains. The bell tower has a carillon of bells.
The visit pairs well with the old town, where São Francisco de Sales lived as bishop of Genebra, and with the Semnoz road, which climbs the same slope. From the forecourt, on a clear day, you can see the mountains on both sides of the lake.
