About Museo del Greco
Doménikos Theotokópoulos, El Greco, was born in Crete, passed through Venice and Rome, and arrived in Toledo around 1577. He lived in the city until his death in 1614 and painted the majority of his work there.
The museum was created at the initiative of the Marquis of la Vega-Inclán, who bought old houses in the judería and renovated them to recreate a 16th-century Toledan residence. The house opened in 1910. For a long time it was said that El Greco had lived there, but the house is a reconstruction; the painter lived on an adjacent plot.
The collection includes the complete Apostolado, the series of portraits of Christ and the twelve apostles, and the View and Plan of Toledo, in which the painter shows the city and a map of it on the same canvas. There are also works by other painters of the period, furniture, ceramics and the garden.
It is a state museum, attached to the Ministry of Culture of Spain. In the basement are the so-called cuevas, remains of old neighborhood constructions.
