About Museo de La Rioja
The Museu de La Rioja occupies the Palácio de Espartero, a Baroque palace built in 1752 in Logroño’s old town, with a stone façade and a central staircase. The name comes from General Baldomero Espartero, who governed Spain as regent in the 19th century and lived in the palace after retiring from politics, when he married a Logroño resident. His equestrian statue stands on the Paseo del Espolón nearby.
The museum, housed in the palace since 1971, tells the region’s story from archaeology to the present. There are prehistoric and Roman finds, medieval wooden religious sculptures such as a Gothic Coronation of the Virgin, and paintings from the 12th to the 19th centuries. Among the best-known pieces are the San Millán panels, 14th-century painted panels linked to the monastery.
An ethnography section shows rural life in La Rioja, with tools, clothing and objects used in field and vineyard work. The museum also has a contemporary art area.
The visit is organised chronologically and helps to understand the connection between the monasteries, the Caminho and wine in La Rioja’s history.
