About Concatedral de Santa María de la Redonda

The co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda is on the Plaza del Mercado, in the heart of the old town. The name comes from a Romanesque church with a round or polygonal plan that stood on the site before. Since 1959 it has been one of the three seats of the diocese, together with the cathedrals of Calahorra and Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a rare case in the Church.

The body of the church was built between 1516 and 1538, in the late Gothic style, with tall cylindrical columns that open into vaults like a stone palm grove. The façade, with the two Baroque twin towers of the 18th century, is the image of Logroño and appears from several streets in the centre.

At the back of the choir is the Chapel of the Angels, with Baroque altarpieces. The most sought-after work is a small painting of the Crucifixion, attributed to Michelangelo, displayed in a protected room.

The square in front, with cafés, is a meeting point and is a few steps from Laurel Street and the Paseo del Espolón.
