About Playa de la Malagueta
La Malagueta is the beach closest to Málaga's centre. It is in the neighbourhood of the same name, between the port and La Caleta beach. It is about 1,200 metres long, with an average width of 45 metres and dark sand.
The neighbourhood arose in the 19th century with sea workers. In 1887, the bathing establishments Apolo and La Estrella moved onto La Malagueta's sand, which became a meeting point for wealthy families in summer. Local fishermen hauled their cast nets there.
Today the beach has showers, toilets, sunbeds, umbrellas and chiringuitos, beach kiosks that serve fish. A classic is the sardine skewers grilled over coals, on boats full of sand.
Behind the beach is the Plaza de Toros de La Malagueta. Along the Paseo de la Farola, the beach connects to Muelle Uno and Centre Pompidou Málaga.
