About Museo Picasso Málaga

Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga in 1881. The idea of a museum dedicated to him in the city emerged in 1953, but it only came to fruition on 27 October 2003, thanks to Christine Ruiz‑Picasso, the painter’s daughter‑in‑law, and Bernard Ruiz‑Picasso, his grandson. Their donations amounted to 155 pieces including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and ceramics.

The collection covers Picasso’s entire career: academic studies from his youth, Cubism, the return to classicism, ceramics and his reinterpretations of old masters made in the 1970s. Temporary exhibitions occupy other rooms.

The museum is housed in the Palacio de los Condes de Buenavista, commissioned around 1530 by Diego de Cazalla, a city councillor. It has two floors around a columned courtyard and a lookout tower. The renovation for the museum was designed by Richard Gluckman, Rafael Martín Delgado and Isabel Cámara.

In the basement, a walkway passes archaeological remains found during the works: stretches of the Phoenician wall of ancient Malaka and Roman and Islamic layers. The rear of the museum faces Calle Alcazabilla, opposite the Teatro Romano.
