About Museo de Málaga

The Museo de Málaga brings together the collections of two of the city's older museums: the Fine Arts Museum, created in 1913, and the Provincial Archaeological Museum, created in 1947. The two collections total around 15,000 archaeological items and 2,000 paintings.

The headquarters are in the Palacio de la Aduana, designed in 1788 and completed in 1826 to serve the flow of travellers from the port. The neoclassical building has a large central courtyard and stands next to Parque de Málaga, a short walk from the Alcazaba.

The archaeology section covers the province from prehistory to the Islamic period. There are cave pieces with prehistoric occupation, Phoenician objects, Roman busts and sculptures, and elements from medieval sites, such as the Alcazaba itself.

The fine arts section concentrates on 19th- and 20th-century painting, highlighting the Málaga school. Until 1997 this collection was housed in the Palacio de Buenavista, the building that today houses the Museo Picasso Málaga, and it remained in storage for almost 20 years until the opening at the Aduana in 2016.
